Black Belt Salsa (BBS / ThisIsSalsa.com) is a Denver-based salsa school built around a unique, system-based curriculum rather than pattern memorization. The method was created and continues to be developed by world-renowned instructor Edie "The Salsa FREAK," and uses a martial-arts-inspired belt progression: every student starts at White Belt and earns each belt color on the way to Black Belt through methodical, step-by-step stages and regular level testing.
The curriculum emphasizes simplicity, sensuality, and technique over complicated turn patterns, with distinct tracks for leaders (rapid move acquisition, partner-pleasing technique) and followers (styling, understanding the lead, adapting to instantaneous changes). Beyond weekly classes, BBS offers private lessons, an apprenticeship/instructor-training program, performance and dance-team training, and event services (weddings, quinceañeras, corporate events, DJ services) across Salsa, Bachata, Cha Cha, Cumbia and more.
What to expect
Your first visit
Group classes run every Tuesday night. Doors open at 7:00pm for a free wine, beer and chocolate meet-and-greet plus practice time; group class starts promptly at 7:30pm and is followed by a social dance at 8:45pm. All ages and all levels are welcome, and everyone begins at White Belt. Beginners can also join occasional one-day intensive workshops (9am-3pm with free lunch). Bringing a dance partner is encouraged but a free partner-search is available.
