About this studio
Jumptown is a Madison, WI swing-dance organization — a registered 501(c)3 non-profit — dedicated to educating the community on swing dancing, primarily Lindy Hop. Born in Harlem, Lindy Hop is described as a versatile dance ranging from fast and athletic to smooth and sexy depending on the music and mood, now danced by a worldwide community.
Jumptown also teaches East Coast Swing, Charleston, Balboa, and some solo jazz including line dances. It hosts weekly social dances and group classes and, when possible, brings in live bands and professional instructors.
What to expect
Your first visit
Swing dance at Jumptown is a social dance focused on connecting and engaging with others; dancers regularly switch partners and partnering carries no assumed romantic context. Newcomers are encouraged to learn social-dance etiquette to enjoy the community safely and respectfully. Beginner lessons typically precede the social dancing (for example, lessons starting at 7:30 before Wednesday socials), and Friday night dances run a lesson from 7:30-8:00 followed by social dancing, with a $10 door fee. New dancers should also sign the Jumptown and venue waivers.
