Overview

Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, established 1904 in London. One of the world's leading dance examination boards, offering qualifications across ballroom, Latin, classical ballet, modern theatre, tap, and many other genres. Operates in 80+ countries.

History

The ISTD was founded in 1904 by a group of dance teachers in London who sought to standardize teaching methods and raise professional standards.

Originally focused on ballroom and Latin, the Society expanded to cover classical ballet, modern theatre, tap, national dance, and other genres.

ISTD examinations became the benchmark for dance teaching qualifications across the British Commonwealth and beyond.

The Society received royal patronage and has been instrumental in establishing dance teaching as a recognized profession.

Today, ISTD operates in over 80 countries with thousands of registered teachers and examiners.

The ISTD's Ballroom and Latin syllabi are among the most widely used worldwide, alongside their extensive ballet and theatre dance programs.

Governance & Structure

ISTD is governed by a Board of Trustees and managed by a professional executive team.

Faculties (specialist committees) oversee each dance genre — Ballroom, Latin American, Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre, Tap, etc.

Examiners are rigorously trained and standardized to ensure consistency worldwide.

The Society maintains and regularly updates its syllabi to reflect evolving technique and pedagogy.

Competition Structure

ISTD does not primarily run competitions — it is an examination and certification body.

ISTD medal tests and graded examinations serve as progression milestones for students.

ISTD-qualified teachers and their students compete in competitions organized by national bodies (BDC, NDCA, etc.).

The Society's annual Congress features workshops, lectures, and performances.
