Tango Buenos Aires
The world's most prestigious tango competition
Best For
Argentine tango dancers competing at the highest international level
Overview
The Mundial de Tango (World Tango Dance Tournament) is organized annually by the Buenos Aires municipal government and is widely regarded as the most prestigious tango event in the world. Divided into Tango de Pista (salon) and Tango Escenario (stage), it serves as the de facto apex authority for competitive Argentine tango since no single world tango federation exists.
History
The World Tango Dance Tournament was established by the Buenos Aires municipal government as part of the annual Buenos Aires Tango Festival.
It has grown into the most important competitive tango event globally, attracting thousands of competitors from dozens of countries.
The tournament's two categories — Tango de Pista (salon style) and Tango Escenario (stage/performance) — reflect the two major branches of Argentine tango.
Qualifying rounds are held in cities worldwide, creating a global competition circuit that feeds into the Buenos Aires finals.
The event is central to Buenos Aires' identity as the birthplace and spiritual home of tango, designated by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
