Overview

Dance Vision International Dance Association publishes the most widely adopted American ballroom & Latin syllabus. Bronze → Silver → Gold levels codify technique steps.

History

DVIDA (Dance Vision International Dance Association) was established in 1996 to provide a standardized syllabus system for American-style ballroom and Latin dancing.

The organization emerged from the Dance Vision video production company, which had been creating instructional dance media since the early 1990s.

DVIDA's syllabus became the dominant curriculum used by independent studios and many franchise locations across the United States.

The system provides clear Bronze → Silver → Gold progression with specific figures, timing, and technique requirements at each level.

DVIDA also certifies teachers through proficiency examinations, establishing minimum competency standards for instructors.

Today, DVIDA is used by hundreds of studios and thousands of teachers, making it the de facto standard for American-style ballroom education.

Governance & Structure

DVIDA operates as a private organization that publishes syllabi, certifies teachers, and maintains standards.

The syllabus committee periodically updates figure requirements and technique specifications.

Teacher certification involves demonstrating proficiency at each level through video examination or in-person testing.

DVIDA does not directly run competitions but its levels are recognized by NDCA and other competition bodies.

Competition Structure

DVIDA itself does not sanction competitions, but its levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) are the standard division framework used across American-style competitions.

Students progress through DVIDA levels and then compete at corresponding divisions in NDCA-sanctioned events.

Proficiency tests serve as internal milestones — passing Gold is roughly equivalent to an advanced amateur level.

Key Programs

Bronze Syllabus

Foundation patterns in each dance style. Focus on timing, basic technique, and partnership.

Silver Syllabus

Gold Syllabus

Advanced patterns approaching open (non-syllabus) competitive level.

Teacher Certification

Multi-level proficiency exams ensuring instructors meet minimum technique standards.
